How Neurofeedback May Help With Autism And Aspergers“Shortly after her autistic son's third neurofeedback treatment session, a mother told me that earlier that day, her son had been introduced to his father’s work colleagues. All his life he had turned away, cowering his head in these situations. On that day, she said, “My son looked people in the eye, held his hand out to shake hands, and said “It’s nice to meet you.” I treated this mother's son in my Bellevue office and then she took the neurofeedback equipment to another part of the state where they lived so she could continue the neurofeedback treatment at home. At the end of one year she called me. She said that she felt that now she had a normal son. In another instance, a young man with Asperger’s started dating successfully for the first time in his life after several sessions of neurofeedback done in my office. Several years ago, a severely autistic boy in his first week of treatment came into the room where his mother was and said “Good morning mother.” She said it was the first time in his life he had done so. These have been some of the most satisfying treatment results I have seen in working with the autism spectrum disorders. It is important to note that neurofeedback does not always work as rapidly or as well and there are times when neurofeedback may not work. However, with these very challenging conditions there have been many times when neurofeedback has resulted in many positive changes that have shown this approach to be very much worth doing.
